Although the data for the Fe6Y3 analogue suggest a
Möbius-strip spin topology, it is not possible to discover
whether this is preserved in the Dy case as a result of the large
contribution of this ion to the susceptibility.
In conclusion, this family of Fe6Ln3 compounds provides
rare example of odd-numbered cyclic coordination clusters.
The observed Fe6Ln3 motif is the largest odd-numbered Fe-Ln
wheel so far characterised. The core can be seen as a giant
triangle of LnIII ions embedded within three FeIII2 moieties. The
susceptibility measurements on the Fe6Y3 compound suggest
that the system has a spin-frustrated Möbius strip topology
rather than a toroidal orientation as was seen in the pure Dy3
triangle.25,26 Detailed single crystal magnetic studies are
planned in order to investigate the spin topology.
