Commercially available aluminum(III) triflate was used as a
cost-effective catalyst for the selective oxidation of glycerol to for-
mic acid under mild reaction conditions.

B/L molar ratios. Al(OTf)3 formed Al–peroxo or
Al–hydroperoxide species in the presence of H2O2, which were
responsible for the selective oxidation of GLY to FA. Al(OTf)3
showed excellent catalytic performance and recyclability, and
thus can also be used for the selective oxidation of other bio-
mass platform molecules. The oxidation method used in this
study is a green approach for the selective oxidation of GLY to
organic acids.
