16] We attempted the procedure for the synthesis of HHTP de-
scribed in ref.[ , but this gave a poor yield (ca. 15% yield),
although the scale of the reaction was decreased. The tempera-
ture and the speed of the addition of the reagent might be
strictly controlled while using ammonium persulfate.

11] 2,3,6,7,10,11-Hexasubstituted triphenylenes with medium-sized
side chains are important. These molecules self-associate to
form discotic liquid crystals in which they are arranged in col-
umns as a result of π stacking of the aromatic rings and
van der Waals interactions between their alkyl chains. Their li-
quid-crystal character or electronic properties can be modified
by changing their substituents. P. J. Collings, M. Hird, Intro-
duction to Liquid Crystals, Taylor and Francis, London, 1997.
