Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images were obtained
with an HT-7700 (Hitachi, Japan) microscope operated at 120 kV
with high resolution. The sample was dispersed by ultrasonication
in ethanol and deposited on a holey Cu gird. Fourier transfer infra-
red (FTIR) spectra were recorded with a Jasco FTIR-4100 spec-
trometer [attenuated total reflectance (ATR); maximum resolution:
0.9 cm–1; the number of acquisitions for ISSs and titania/sulfated
titania were 300 and 50, respectively]. Nitrogen adsorption iso-
therms were obtained at –196 °C with a surface area and porosity
analyzer (Micromeritics, Tristar II 3020) after evacuation at 150 °C
for 12 h. The thermal stability of the catalysts was examined by
thermogravimetric analysis (TGA, SDT Q600V20.9 Build 20) un-
der a flow of nitrogen at a heating rate of 10 °C/min. The acid
density of the –SO3H groups was measured by acid–base titrations
with phenolphthalein as an indicator.[21,52] In general, 0.01 mol/L
sodium chloride aqueous solution (20 mL) was added to the cata-
lyst (0.1 g), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for
1 h. After filtration, the supernatant solution was titrated with an
aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (0.01 mol/L).

Reaction Procedure and Analysis: The catalytic hydrolysis of ethyl
acetate was performed as follows: ethyl acetate solution (10 mL of
5% in water, 5 mmol) and catalyst (0.1 g) were added to a 50 mL
round-bottomed flask, and the mixture was heated to reflux for a
predetermined time. After completion of the reaction, the products
were analyzed by GC [DS Science, IGC 7200 equipped with a flame
ionization detector (FID)]. The liquid-phase butylation of phenol
was performed in a round-bottomed flask (50 mL) with nitroben-
zene as solvent. The catalyst (0.1 g), solvent (10 mL), phenol
(0.094 g), and tert-butyl alcohol (0.148 g) were added (molar ratio
of phenol/tBuOH 1:2) to the round-bottomed flask, and the tem-
perature was increased to 150 °C. The products were collected after
different time intervals and analyzed by GC.
