In summary, the medium micropore-embedded ordered cylindrical
nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon was successfully developed for the
highly efficient electroreduction of CO2 to ethanol. The ethanol
production rate was significantly promoted by optimizing the medium
micropore content, while the Faradaic efficiency remained at a
relatively high level. Our experiments and DFT calculations
demonstrated that the medium microporous structures with the active
pyridinic/pyrrolic N sites result in the fast kinetics of charge transfer
and high electric driving potentials, which are crucial for the
enhancement of ethanol formation. This work provides new insights
into the design of electrocatalysts for the highly efficient conversion of
CO2 to multicarbon products.
