occurrence of
a black platinum precipitate. This behavior
indicated that the in situ formation of small active colloidal
particles from the photolysis reaction could not participate in the
photochemical generation of H2. Subsequently, a decreased rate
of hydrogen evolution after an illumination time of 8 h was clearly
observed. This decrease was probably due to the decomposition
of the catalyst, as determined from UV-vis spectra of the
photocatalytic solution before and after irradiation (Figure S8);
that is, the absorption intensity of 1 decreased during photolysis.
Thus, the photostability of 1 is a limiting factor affecting the
extended photocatalytic process.

For contrast, we also performed a photocatalytic reaction
using 2 in the presence of K2PtCl4, and a TON of 40 was achieved
after illumination for 12 h (Table 1, run 9) under an identical
experimental setup. The catalytic activity of compound 3 was
extremely low (TON <1) when compound 3 was used alone. This
activity is consistent with previous studies of similar Pt(II) terpy-
based complexes. In the catalytic system of 1, the molecular
assembly was bifunctional and acted as a sensitizer and as a
catalytic center in the formation of hydrogen through a reductive
quenching pathway. Complex 2 has a bimolecular rate constant
of 5.71 × 108 M-1 S-1 for electron transfer with H2A (Figure S9); the
value is one order of magnitude higher than that of 1. Therefore,
the intramolecular energy transfer between the light-harvesting
unit and the catalytic center in 1 likely played a significant role in
the photoinduced photocatalytic reaction and thus enabled the
compound to achieve reliably superior performance, as
expected.[26] As in previous related studies, the formation of a Pt
reduced state from the photoreduction of the catalyst in the
presence of an electron donor was needed for the subsequent
reduction of the protons at the Pt site to release hydrogen.[27]
However, there was no unambiguous experimental evidence for
the formation of catalytically active colloidal or low-ligated
platinum (0) species under the conditions applied, and further
evidence for this formation is the subject of ongoing investigation.
In summary, a new gold-platinum supramolecular assembly
based on a cyclometalated alkyngold(III) sensitizer with a C^N^C
ligand and a platinum(II) terpyridine acetylide catalyst was
designed and synthesized for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
As revealed by the results, the covalent supramolecular complex
is significantly more efficient than the corresponding dissociated
system. This work expands the possibility of developing promising
novel photocatalysts for efficient direct solar energy conversion to
hydrogen. The reaction mechanism behind this process is still
