Diphosphane (CAS NO.13445-50-6) is produced by the hydrolysis of calcium monophosphide. According to an optimized procedure, hydrolysis of 400 g of CaP at -30 °C gives about 20 g of product, slightly contaminated with phosphine.
Ignites spontaneously in air. A concentration of 0.2% will cause flammable gases to ignite. When Diphosphane (CAS NO.13445-50-6) is heated to decomposition, it emits toxic fumes of POx and phosphine. See also PHOSPHINE.
This colourless liquid is nonbasic, unstable at room temperature, and spontaneously flammable in air. It is only poorly soluble in water but dissolves in organic solvents.
