High vacuum thermolysis of 2-phenyl-4H-benzo-1,3,2-dioxaborine 5 gives a mixture of known trimer 4 and unknown tetramer 6 of o-methylene quinone.According to the IR, NMR and MS spectra two structures of 6 are possible: 6a or 6b.The problem was solved by X-ray diffraction.The crystals of C28H24O4 are monoclinic, P21/c, with a = 19.498(4), b = 6.194(1), c = 17.824(5) Angstroem, β = 93.08(2) deg, V = 2149(1) Angstroem3, Z = 4, Dc = 1.31 g.cm-3.The X-ray diffraction analysis shows the structure 6a of tetramer which is formed regiospecifically from two molecules of dimer 3. thermolysis / ortho-methylene quinone / X-ray crystal structure determination
