10141-05-6 Usage

Description

Cobalt nitrate is an odorless red solid that is soluble in water and most organic solvents. It is a cobalt salt in which the cobalt metal is in the +2 oxidation state and the counter-anion is nitrate. The hexahydrate form is a red monoclinic crystal that is deliquescent in moist air, with a density of 1.87 g/cm3. It decomposes at 55°C, losing three molecules of water, and further decomposes to green cobalt(II) oxide at 74°C. The anhydrous salt is a pale red powder with a density of 2.49 g/cm3 and decomposes around 100°C.

Uses

Used in Porcelain Decoration:
Cobalt nitrate is used as a pigment for the decoration of porcelain and stones, providing vibrant colors and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of these materials.
Used in Invisible Inks and Cobalt Pigments:
Cobalt nitrate is utilized as a key component in the formulation of invisible inks and cobalt pigments, which have various applications in security and artistic industries.
Used in Hair Dyes:
In the hair dye industry, cobalt nitrate is used as a colorant to achieve specific shades and tones, particularly for creating unique and vibrant hair colors.
Used in Animal Feeds:
Cobalt nitrate is added to animal feeds as a supplement to provide essential trace elements for the health and well-being of animals.
Used as an Additive to Soils:
In agriculture, cobalt nitrate is used as an additive to soils to improve nutrient content and promote plant growth.
Used in Catalysts Preparation:
Cobalt nitrate is employed in the preparation of catalysts, which are crucial in various chemical reactions and industrial processes.
Used in Vitamin Supplements:
Cobalt nitrate is also used in the production of vitamin supplements, particularly those containing cobalt as an essential nutrient for human health.
Used in High Purity Cobalt Production:
Cobalt(II) Dinitrate is mainly reduced to metallic high purity cobalt, which is used for catalysis reactions in various industries.

Preparation

Cobalt(II) nitrate is prepared by treating the metal, or its oxide, hydroxide or carbonate with dilute nitric acid. The solution on evaporation yields red crystals of hexahydrate: Co + 2HNO3 → Co(NO3)2 + H2 Co(OH)2+ 2HNO3 → Co(NO3)2 + 2H2O CoCO3+ 2HNO3→ Co(NO3)2 + CO2 + H2O.

Air & Water Reactions

Water soluble.

Reactivity Profile

Mixtures of metal/nonmetal nitrates with alkyl esters may explode, owing to the formation of alkyl nitrates; mixtures a nitrate with phosphorus, tin (II) chloride or other reducing agents may react explosively [Bretherick, 1979 p. 108-109].

Hazard

Oxidizing agent, dangerous fire risk in contact with organic materials.

Health Hazard

Inhalation causes shortness of breath and coughing; permanent disability may occur. Ingestion causes pain and vomiting. Contact with eyes or skin causes irritation.

Flammability and Explosibility

Notclassified

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 10141-05-6 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,0,1,4 and 1 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 0 and 5 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 10141-05:
(7*1)+(6*0)+(5*1)+(4*4)+(3*1)+(2*0)+(1*5)=36
36 % 10 = 6
So 10141-05-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
