The reaction of acyl(hydrido)cobalt(III) complexes CoIII(O∩C{double bond, long}O)(H)(PMe3)3 (1-5) with (2-diphenylphosphanyl)thiophenol afforded four types of complexes CoIII(O∩C{double bond, long}O)(P∩S)(PMe3)2 (6-7), CoIII(O∩C{double bond, long}O)(O∩OHC)(PMe3)2 (11-15), CoI(P∩S)(PMe3)3 (16), and CoII(P∩S)2(PMe3) (17). A mechanism for the formation of these complexes is proposed. The influences of chelating ligands containing hard/soft donor atoms on the stability of the cobalt complexes in different oxidation states are discussed with respect to the HSAB concept.
