A carbonyl ligand of ?-arenetricarbonylchromium(0) complexes is photochemically displaced to give ?-arenedicarbonyl complexes of chromium(0) with thio-ether ligands. In contrast, irradiation of ?-arenetricarbonylchromium compounds with dithio-ester and trithiocarbonate ligands yields only pentacarbonyl complexes.Substitution of the ?-arene ring, the thio-ether ligand, or both, is easily achieved at room temperature and in polar solvents. The crystal structure of cis-teracarbonyl(methyl-1,3-dithian-2-methyl-2-dithiocarboxylate)chromium(0) shows remarkably similar Cr-S bond distances of 2.379(2) and 2.383(2) Angstroem for the respective thio-ether and dithio-ester sulphur-donor atoms of bidentate ligand.
