The invention relates to a preparation method of an imidacloprid impurity. The preparation method comprises the following steps: adding N-nitroiminoimidazolidine into an organic solvent and uniformlymixing; then adding sodium hydroxide and 2-chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine for reaction to generate 1, 3-bis [(6-chloro-3-pyridyl) methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidine imine, wherein the reaction temperatureis 50-90 DEG C and the mass ratio of 2-chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine to N-nitroiminoimidazolidine is 2.5: 1-10: 1; adding hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH value to 7-8 and recovering the organic solvent to obtain a concentrated solution; adding hot water with the temperature of 50 DEG C or above into the concentrated solution, stirring, preserving heat and filtering to obtain a wet crude product; and adding the wet crude product into methanol or ethanol for refining to obtain a finished product. The preparation method of the imidacloprid impurity has the advantages of high product purity and few impurities.
