Unsymetrical carbo- and di- and tricarbocyanines containig benzimidazolium, benzothiazolium, and indolium hetero residues were synthesized. The effect of the length of the polymethine chain on the position, intesity, and form of the absorption bands in relation to the electronic asymmetry of the dyes was studied.A series of characteristics of the long-wawe absorption bands of these dyes were calculated by the method of moments.Various factors which determine the change in the characteristics of the absorption bands with increase in the lenght of the polymethine chain in the unsymmetrical dyes are discussed on the basis of NMR spectroscopy, study of solvatochromic effects, and quantum-chemical calculations.
