General Description

1H-Indol-6-ol, 3-methyl- is a chemical compound also known as 3-Methylindole or Skatole. It is a white to off-white crystalline solid with a faint odor and is commonly found in the waste products of animals. Skatole is a volatile compound and is responsible for the characteristic odor of feces and has been identified as a contributor to the odor of pig and cattle manure. It is also a precursor to the formation of the odor compounds found in the meat of certain animals. Skatole is also used in the perfume industry to produce animalic fragrances and as a flavor additive in certain foods.
