Usage

Description

Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is a ceramic material that is widely used in various applications due to its unique properties. It is a solid electrolyte with high oxygen-ionic conductivity and electronic conductivity, while also blocking electronic conduction. YSZ is synthesized from yttrium nitrate or isopropoxide using the sol-gel method, and its nanoparticles can be prepared in supercritical water or through CO2 laser-based vaporization methods.

Uses

Used in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs):
Yttria stabilized zirconia is used as an electrolyte in solid oxide fuel cells, particularly in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) operating below 800°C. The high electronic conductivity of YSZ thin films deposited using sputtering targets contributes to the high performance of IT-SOFCs, addressing the challenges of degradation rates and material costs associated with SOFCs operating at higher temperatures.
Used in Oxygen Sensors:
YSZ is also utilized as a solid electrolyte in oxygen sensors, where its high oxygen-ionic conductivity allows for efficient and accurate detection of oxygen levels in various environments.
