The intramolecular Wittig reaction of bis(benzyltriphenylphosphonium bromides) 3, 4 leads to the 2,2'-biindolyls 6 or the 1,2-diindolylethylenes 7, respectively.The latter system has not been described yet.Alternatively, by reaction of 1-benzofuran-2-carbaldehyde (9) with triphenylphosphonium bromide (10) under Wittig conditions, the hitherto unknown 1,2-dibenzofurylethylene (8) is obtained.For this purpose, a new preparation of 9 was worked out.The novel compounds show strong fluorescence upon UV irradiation.
