-
Paragraph 0091-0093, (2017/07/26)
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound capable of elevating an upper limit temperature where a SmC (smectic-C) phase of a liquid crystal can exist, broadening a temperature width of the SmC phase or enlarging a tilt angle of the SmC phase, and to provide a liquid crystal composition comprising the compound and a display element including the liquid crystal composition.SOLUTION: [1] The compound is expressed by general formula (i) shown below. In general formula (i), R and R' each independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or an alkoxy group having 1 to 9 carbon atoms; A1, A2 and A3 each independently represent a 1,4-phenylene group or a 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene group; m represents an integer of 1 to 10; and Y represents a cyclohexylene group, a phenylene group, a bicyclooctylene group or a dialkylsilylene group.
Synthesis and mesomorphic properties of laterally fluorinated alkyl 4′′-alkylterphenyl-4-yl carbonate liquid crystals

, p. 891 - 900 (2014/01/23)
Fifteen series of homologues of a variety of mono-, di- and trifluorosubstituted alkyl 4′′-alkylterphenyl-4-yl carbonates have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties have been determined. From among 95 prepared compounds, 40 pure nematogens have been found, as well as 55 mesogens with orthogonal and tilted smectic phases in broad temperature ranges. The type and combination of the LC phase strongly depend on the position and number of the fluorine atoms. Physical properties and correlations between the molecular core fluorosubstitution, the length of the terminal chains and the type and sequence of the liquid crystalline phases, have been determined. The compounds are useful for the formulation of nematic mixtures as well as ferroelectric ones.
The Synthesis and Transition Temperatures of Some 4,4"-dialkyl- and 4,4"-Alkoxyalkyl-1,1':4',1"-terphenyls with 2,3- or 2',3'-difluoro Substituents and of their Biphenyl Analogues

, p. 2041 - 2054 (2007/10/02)
The tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(o)-catalysed coupling of arylboronyc acids with aryl halides is used to prepare several 4,4"-dialkyl- and 4,4"-alkoxyalkyl-1,1':4',1"-terphenyls with 2,3- or 2',3'-difluoro substituents and their related biphenyl systems.Lithiation ortho to a 1,2-difluoroaromatic unit provides the route to the 2,3-difluoroarylboronic acids. The 2,3-difluoro substituted terphenyls are low-melting liquid crystals with wide-range Sc phases and no underlying smectic phase; these compounds are excellent hosts for ferroelectric systems. The compounds with widest Sc ranges are those with the difluoro substituents in an end ring and the compounds with difluoro substituents in the central ring show more nematic character and so are useful for ECB devices.
