12173-47-6 Usage

Description

Hectorite is a naturally occurring 2:1 phyllosilicate clay belonging to the smectite (montmorillonite) group and is a principal component of bentonite clay. It is an odorless, white to cream-colored, waxy, and dull powder composed of aggregates of colloidalsized lath-shaped crystals.

Uses

Used in the Chill-Proofing of Beer:
Hectorite is used as a thickener and suspending agent in the chill-proofing process of beer, which helps to improve the stability and quality of the final product.
Used in Oil and Gas Industry:
Hectorite is used as a thickener and suspending agent in water-based systems, particularly in oil-in-water emulsions, which are commonly used in the oil and gas industry for various applications such as drilling muds and enhanced oil recovery.
Used in Cosmetics and Personal Care:
Hectorite is used as a viscosity modifier, emulsifier, and stabilizer in the cosmetics and personal care industry, providing improved texture and stability to various products such as creams, lotions, and gels.
Used in Agriculture:
Hectorite is used as a soil conditioner and additive in the agriculture industry, helping to improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient absorption for better crop growth and yield.
Used in Environmental Applications:
Hectorite is used in environmental applications such as waste management and remediation, where it can help to stabilize and immobilize contaminants, as well as in the treatment of industrial effluents to remove harmful substances.

Production Methods

Naturally occurring hectorite is mined from weathered bentonite deposits. It is further processed to remove grit and impurities so that it is suitable for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.

Pharmaceutical Applications

Hectorite is used widely in pharmaceutical preparations as an absorbent, emulsifier, stabilizer, suspending agent, thickener, and viscosity-controlling agent. Hectorite is a component of other naturally occurring clays and hence may be suitable for use in similar pharmaceutical formulation applications as an adsorbent, oil-in-water emulsifying agent, suspending agent, or viscosity-increasing agent. It is also available as a synthetic material. Hectorite is used to modify the thixotropic behavior of pharmaceutical dispersions and for stabilizing oil-inwater emulsion bases. When combined with an appropriate cation, hectorite exhibits properties suitable for use as a contrast agent.

Safety

Hectorite is a natural clay mineral that is not considered acutely toxic; therefore no toxicity values have been established. However, hectorite may contain small amounts of crystalline silica in the form of quartz. Dust can be irritating to the respiratory tract and eyes, and contact with this material may cause drying of the skin. Chronic exposure to crystalline silica may have adverse effects on the respiratory system. EU labeling states that the material is not classified as dangerous.

storage

Hectorite is a stable material and should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Incompatibilities

Contact between hectorite and hydrofluoric acid may generate heat.

Regulatory Status

Reported in the EPA TSCA Inventory.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 12173-47-6 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,2,1,7 and 3 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 4 and 7 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 12173-47:
(7*1)+(6*2)+(5*1)+(4*7)+(3*3)+(2*4)+(1*7)=76
76 % 10 = 6
So 12173-47-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
