By means of x-ray structure analysis and IR spectroscopy it was shown that the picryl derivative of 2-pyridinemethanol in the crystalline state exists as a zwitterion spirocyclic complex of the Meisenheimer type, which in solution is in equilibrium with the open form: 2-pyridine.The state of equilibrium in various solvents is described by the Pal'm-Koppel' equation. In contrast to this, 8-(picryloxy)quinoline exists as the open ether form both in solution and in the crystalline state.
