1321-12-6 Usage

Description

Nitrotoluene is an organic compound that exists in three isomeric forms, namely ortho-nitrotoluene, meta-nitrotoluene, and para-nitrotoluene. It is characterized by its weak aromatic odor and can be found as a yellow solid crystal or liquid. Nitrotoluene has a melting point ranging from 32 to 59°F, is insoluble in water, and soluble in alcohol. It is denser than water and is toxic by ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. The flash point of nitrotoluene is 223°F, and its boiling point is 428°F. During combustion, it produces toxic oxides of nitrogen.

Uses

1. Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Nitrotoluene is used as a chemical intermediate for the production of various chemicals, including dyes, pharmaceuticals, and explosives. Its versatility as a starting material in the synthesis of different compounds makes it valuable in the chemical industry.
2. Used in Dyes and Pigments Industry:
Nitrotoluene is used as a raw material for the synthesis of dyes and pigments, which are essential for coloring various products such as textiles, plastics, and paints.
3. Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Nitrotoluene serves as a starting material for the synthesis of certain pharmaceutical compounds, contributing to the development of new drugs and medications.
4. Used in Explosives Industry:

5. Used in Fuel Additives Industry:
Nitrotoluene can be used as an additive in the fuel industry to improve the performance and efficiency of fuels, particularly in internal combustion engines.
6. Used in Rubber Industry:
Nitrotoluene is employed as a solvent and a chemical intermediate in the rubber industry, where it is used to produce various rubber chemicals and additives.
7. Used in Agriculture:
Nitrotoluene can be used as a starting material for the synthesis of certain agrochemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides, which are essential for protecting crops and ensuring food security.
8. Used in Plastics and Polymers Industry:
Nitrotoluene is utilized in the plastics and polymers industry as a starting material for the synthesis of various additives, stabilizers, and other compounds that improve the properties of plastics and polymers.

Air & Water Reactions

Insoluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

p-NITROTOLUENE and sulfuric acid explode at 80°C [Chem. Eng. News 27:2504]. Many explosions have occurred in the distillation of nitrotoluene owing to its heat sensitivity. May become unstable in the presence of strong bases.

Health Hazard

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Fire Hazard

Combustible material: may burn but does not ignite readily. Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may pollute waterways. Substance may be transported in a molten form.

Safety Profile

A poison. May decomposeexplosively if heated above 190°C. When heated todecomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx.

Potential Exposure

The nitrotoluenes are used in the production of toluidines and other dye intermediates. All isomers are used in manufacture of agriculture and rubber chemicals and in various dyes.

Shipping

UN1664 Nitrotoluenes, (o-; m-; p-), Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials.

Incompatibilities

Decomposes on contact with strong oxidizers; strong acids; reducing agents; strong bases; ammonia, amines producing toxic fumes, causing fire and explosion hazard. Heat above 190C may cause explosive decomposition. Attacks some plastics, rubbers, and coatings.

Waste Disposal

Controlled incineration-care must be taken to maintain complete combustion at all times. Incineration of large quantities may require scrubbers to control the emission of nitrogen oxides.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 1321-12-6 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 1,3,2 and 1 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 1 and 2 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 1321-12:
(6*1)+(5*3)+(4*2)+(3*1)+(2*1)+(1*2)=36
36 % 10 = 6
So 1321-12-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
