13444-85-4 Usage

Description

Nitrogen triiodide is a black, unstable crystalline compound that is highly sensitive to touch and can explode even with the slightest contact when dry. Due to its extreme sensitivity, it is not suitable for use as an explosive in practical applications. To handle it safely, it is typically kept wet with ether.

Uses

Used in Research and Education:
Nitrogen triiodide is used as a subject of study in the fields of chemistry and physics, particularly for understanding the properties of highly sensitive compounds and the principles of chemical reactivity. It serves as an educational tool to demonstrate the concept of sensitivity and the importance of safety precautions in handling certain chemicals.
Used in Special Effects Industry:
Although not suitable for practical explosive applications, nitrogen triiodide can be used in the special effects industry for creating small-scale explosions in controlled environments, such as in movies or television shows. Its dramatic reaction upon contact makes it an interesting choice for visual effects, provided that proper safety measures are taken.
Used in Scientific Demonstrations:
Nitrogen triiodide is also used in scientific demonstrations to illustrate the concept of chemical instability and the potential energy stored in chemical bonds. By showing how a seemingly harmless touch can trigger a powerful reaction, it helps to emphasize the importance of understanding and respecting the properties of different substances.

Hazard

Explodes at slightest touch when dry; when handled it should be kept wet with ether. Too sensitive to be used as explosive, because it cannot be stored, handled, or transported safely.

Safety Profile

A severe explosion hazard when shocked, exposed to heat or flame, or by spontaneous chemical reaction. It has no known uses as an explosive because it is far too sensitive in the dry state to store or handle safely. If this material must be worked with, it should be kept wet. A convenient way of keeping it wet is with ether; when it is needed in the dry state, it simply has to be taken out into the open and the ether will evaporate, leaving it perfectly dry. When dry, it wdl explode when given the slightest touch, vibration, or rise in temperature. Even a puff of air lrected into it can cause it to detonate. It is a hgh explosive and is very violent. Incompatible with O3 . H2S, Cl2, Br2, acids. See also IODIDES.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 13444-85-4 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,3,4,4 and 4 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 8 and 5 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 13444-85:
(7*1)+(6*3)+(5*4)+(4*4)+(3*4)+(2*8)+(1*5)=94
94 % 10 = 4
So 13444-85-4 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
