Interferon beta-1b, also known as Betaseron, is a protein expressed in a recombinant E. coli and is equivalent in type to the interferon expressed by human fibroblasts. It is a stable analog of human interferon-beta produced by recombinant DNA technique and is the first biotechnology product licensed under the FDA's accelerated approval regulation. Interferon beta-1b possesses antiviral and immunomodulating activities, making it a promising pharmaceutical candidate for various applications.Uses
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:Interferon beta-1b is used as an immunomodulator for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). It helps decrease the frequency of clinical exacerbation in ambulatory patients with RRMS, a condition characterized by unpredictable attacks resulting in neurological deficits, separated by variable periods of remission.
Interferon beta-1b is also used as a therapeutic agent for its potential in treating melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, genital warts, hepatitis, rhinovirus, and several types of malignant tumors. It demonstrates immunoregulatory properties, including decreasing T-cell proliferation, blocking the synthesis of interferon-gamma that may be involved in MS, inhibiting the release of other cytokines that damage oligodendrocytes, and increasing T suppressor-cell activity.
