Description
Interferonbeta1a/Humaninterferonbeta1a, also known as interferon beta-1a (recombinant), is a glycoprotein consisting of 166 amino acids with a molecular mass of approximately 22,000 Da. It is structurally similar to interferon beta-1b, with the difference being the substitution of a cysteine for a serine and the presence of glycosylation. Interferonbeta1a is primarily used for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and is produced from cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells containing the engineered human gene for interferon beta-1a.Uses
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:Interferonbeta1a/Humaninterferonbeta1a is used as an antineoplastic and biological response modifier for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). It is believed to reverse a suppressor cell defect, favor the generation of T helper-2 type responses, and exert immunoregulatory and antiviral actions. The drug also has an antagonistic effect on γ-interferon, which is known to exacerbate the symptoms of MS. This overall beneficial effect contributes to the slower progression to disability and a less noticeable breakdown of the blood-brain barrier in patients treated with interferon beta-1a.
Interferonbeta1a/Humaninterferonbeta1a is used as a potential abortifacient and an inhibitor of cytochrome P450. The dosage form is a powder for solution that is reconstituted in sterile water, with excipients including human albumin, sodium chloride, and phosphate buffer.
