Ten new complexes of thorium(IV) and dioxouranium(VI) with a new heterocyclic base, i.e., 4-vinylpyridine (4-VinPy) have been synthesized in non-aqueous medium and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, magnetic moments, molecular weight determination and i.r. spectral studies. They have been assigned the general composition ThX4.n(4-VinPy) (X = Cl(1-), Br(1-), I(1-) or NCS(1-), n = 4; X = NO3(1-), n = 2) and UO2X2.2(4-VinPy) (X = Br(1-), I(1-), NCS(1-), NO3(1-)or CH3COO(1-). Thermogravimetric and X-ray powder diffraction studies o f some representative complexes have also been reported. The coordination number of Th(IV) is 6, 8 or 10 and for U(VI) 6 or 8 depending upon thenature of anion present.
