Description

Iron dihydroxide, also known as ferrous hydroxide, is a chemical compound with the formula Fe(OH)2. It is a white, amorphous powder or pale green, hexagonal crystals when partially oxidized. Iron dihydroxide has a density of 3.4g/cm3, is insoluble in water, and decomposes upon heating. It is soluble in acids and moderately soluble in ammonium salt solutions, but insoluble in alkalies. iron dihydroxide oxidizes in air, forming a white flocculent precipitate when iron(II) salts are treated with alkali under air-free conditions. In the presence of air, it rapidly darkens to a dark green and then to an almost black color, with both iron(II) and iron(III) present in the precipitate. With an excess of oxygen, red-brown iron(III) hydrous oxide is formed. Ammonia incompletely precipitates iron(II) hydroxide, partly due to the formation of iron(II) ammonia complexes.

Uses

1. Used in Abrasives:
Iron dihydroxide is used as an abrasive material for various applications, such as in the manufacturing of grinding wheels, sandpapers, and other abrasive products. Its hardness and ability to bond with other materials make it a suitable choice for these purposes.
2. Used in Pharmaceutical Applications:
Iron dihydroxide is utilized in the pharmaceutical industry for various purposes, including the treatment of iron deficiency anemia and as a component in the synthesis of certain drugs. Its ability to bind with other compounds and its reactivity with oxygen make it a valuable ingredient in the development of pharmaceutical products.
3. Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Due to its reactivity with oxygen and other compounds, iron dihydroxide is used as a starting material or intermediate in the synthesis of various chemicals, such as dyes, pigments, and other specialty chemicals.
4. Used in Environmental Applications:
Iron dihydroxide can be employed in environmental applications, such as water treatment and soil remediation, to remove contaminants and heavy metals from the environment. Its ability to form complexes with various ions and compounds makes it an effective agent for these purposes.
5. Used in Analytical Chemistry:
Iron dihydroxide is used as a reagent in analytical chemistry for the determination of various elements and compounds. Its reactivity and solubility properties make it a useful tool in the analysis of samples for research and quality control purposes.

Preparation

Iron(II) hydroxide may be prepared by precipitation of an iron(II) salt solution with caustic soda or caustic potash in the absence of air. Pure compound may be obtained by mixing solutions of caustic potash and iron(II) sulfate— both the solutions made in freshly boiled water—in a reducing atmosphere of hydrogen: Fe2+ + 2OHˉ → Fe(OH)2.

Structure and conformation

Iron(II) hydroxide crystallizes with the CdI2 layer structure in which every iron atom is surrounded by six OH groups.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 18624-44-7 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,8,6,2 and 4 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 4 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 18624-44:
(7*1)+(6*8)+(5*6)+(4*2)+(3*4)+(2*4)+(1*4)=117
117 % 10 = 7
So 18624-44-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
