The aryloxo ytterbium complex (ArO)YbCl2(THF)3 (ArO = 2,6-ditertbutyl-4-methylphenoxo) has been prepared by the reaction of anhydrous YbCl3 withArONa in THF in the ratio of 1 : 1 at room temperature. The crystal str ucture was determined by X-ray diffraction. The molecular complex is a six-coordinate monomer. Two chlorine atoms, one oxygen atom of aryloxo and three oxygen atoms of THF coordinate to ytterbium atom to form a pseudo-octahedron. It belongs to orthorhombic crystal system, space group Fddd. The Yb-O(Ar) distance and the Yb-Cl distance are 2.083(5)? and 2.555(2)?, respectively.
