25340-17-4 Usage

Description

Diethylbenzene (DEB) is a clear, colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. It is less dense than water and insoluble in water, with a flash point of 140°F. DEB is a chemical compound that belongs to the aromatic hydrocarbon family and is used as a starting material for various chemical reactions and applications.

Uses

1. Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Diethylbenzene is used as a starting material for the synthesis of divinylbenzene (DVB) through a dehydrogenation reaction. DVB is an essential component in the production of crosslinked polystyrene, which is a type of polymer with enhanced mechanical properties and chemical resistance.
2. Used in Heat Transfer Applications:
Diethylbenzene is also employed as a low-temperature heat transfer fluid when combined with biphenyls. This application takes advantage of DEB's thermal stability and low freezing point, making it suitable for use in industrial processes that require efficient heat transfer at low temperatures.

Air & Water Reactions

Flammable. Insoluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

Vigorous reactions, sometimes amounting to explosions, can result from the contact between aromatic hydrocarbons, such as Diethylbenzene, and strong oxidizing agents. They can react exothermically with bases and with diazo compounds. Substitution at the benzene nucleus occurs by halogenation (acid catalyst), nitration, sulfonation, and the Friedel-Crafts reaction.

Health Hazard

High vapor concentrations produce eye and respiratory tract irritation, dizziness, depression. Liquid irritates and may blister skin, can cause corneal injury to eye.

Fire Hazard

HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water.

Flammability and Explosibility

Nonflammable

Chemical Reactivity

Reactivity with Water No reaction; Reactivity with Common Materials: No reaction; Stability During Transport: Stable; Neutralizing Agents for Acids and Caustics: Not pertinent; Polymerization: Not pertinent; Inhibitor of Polymerization: Not pertinent.

Safety Profile

hhldly toxic by ingestion. A skin and eye irritant. Flammable liquid when exposed to heat or flame; can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and fumes. See also ETHYL BENZENE.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 25340-17-4 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 2,5,3,4 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 1 and 7 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 25340-17:
(7*2)+(6*5)+(5*3)+(4*4)+(3*0)+(2*1)+(1*7)=84
84 % 10 = 4
So 25340-17-4 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
