α- Versus β-Elimination Photochemistry of Oligosilyl-and Oligosilylmethyl-Iron Complexes: Photochemistry of FpSiMe2SiMe2CH2Fp (Fp = (η5-C5H5)Fe(CO)2)

The bimetallic oligosilylmethyl complex Fp-(SiMe2)2CH2Fp (1) has been prepared and characterized. Upon photolytic irradiation 1 rearranges, via β-elimination chemistry at the iron-carbon end of the chain, to form FpSiMe2CH2SiMe2Fp (2). No evidence for α-elimination chemistry at the other iron center was observed. The crystal structures of both 1 and 2 are presented for complete characterization.
