Methods for preparation of cyclic alkylene carbonates which include a six-membered ring as part of their chemical structure are disclosed. According to the present invention, an oxide, alkoxide, or carboxylate salt of a metal selected from the group consisting of: zinc, titanium, or tin is used to catalyze the reaction between a 1,3-diol and a dialkyl carbonate, conducted at any temperature in the range of between 70°- 170 °C, including every degree therebetween.
