The tetrahedral complex [Hg(C6F5)(np3)](CF3SO3), np3=N(CH2CH2PPh2)3 has been prepared and characterized by single-crystal diffraction study and NMR spectroscopy (1H, 31P, 199Hg). The crystal structure consists of [Hg(C6F5)(np3)]+ cations, (CF3SO3)- anions and dichloromethane solvent molecules. In the cation the mercury atom is coordinated to the three phosphorus atoms of the np3 ligand and by a C6F5 molecule with a geometry very close to that of tetrahedral. The NMR measurements, in dichloromethane solution at room temperature, are fully consistent, showing the formation of linkages between the Hg(C6F5) fragment and the three phosphorus atoms of the np3, which are non-labile in the NMR time scale.
