General Description

Poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl), .alpha.-(dodecylphenyl)-.omega.-hydroxy-, phosphate, also known as Triton X-100 phosphate, is a synthetic compound that belongs to the class of organic compounds known as polyethylene glycols. Triton X-100 is a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier often used in biochemical applications to solubilize proteins. It is derived from polyethylene glycol (PEG). The phosphate form of Triton X-100 is usually used as a detergent in the process of protein solubilization. Triton X-100 phosphate, like all polyoxyethylene detergents, is known to form micelles in aqueous solutions, groups of detergent molecules that enclose a small area of water. This surfactant can be harmful if swallowed or if it comes in contact with skin or eyes. It is often used in various research and industrial settings.
