The 4-ulose and the 3-ulose, both derived in two steps from the α-methyl glycoside of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc), act as organocatalysts in the asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes, with unprecedented complementary enantioselectivity.
