513-79-1 Usage

Description

Cobalt carbonate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CoCO3, which occurs naturally as the mineral cobalt spar or sphaerocobaltite. It is characterized by its pink rhombohedral crystals, a refractive index of 1.855, a density of 4.13 g/cm3, and is insoluble in water and ethanol but soluble in acids. Cobalt carbonate is a paramagnetic solid and is used as an intermediate in the hydrometallurgical purification of cobalt from its ore.

Used as a Precursor to Cobalt Carbonyl:
It is a precursor to cobalt carbonyl, which is an important compound in the synthesis of various cobalt-based materials and catalysts.
Used in Blue Pottery Glazes:
Cobalt carbonate is used in the formulation of blue pottery glazes, such as those used in delftware, to achieve the characteristic blue color.
Used in the Hydrometallurgical Purification of Cobalt:
Cobalt(II) carbonate is an intermediate in the hydrometallurgical purification process of cobalt from its ore, which is essential for obtaining high-purity cobalt for various applications.

Preparation

Cobalt carbonate is prepared by heating cobaltous sulfate, cobaltous chloride or any Co2+ salt with sodium bicarbonate in solution: CoSO4 + NaHCO3→ CoCO3 + NaHSO4

Preparation

Cobalt(II) carbonate is prepared by heating cobaltous sulfate, cobaltous chloride or any Co2+ salt with sodium bicarbonate in solution: CoSO4 + NaHCO3 → CoCO3 + NaHSO4

Reactions

Cobalt carbonate dissolves in concentrated HCl or HNO3 when heated, evolving CO2: CoCO3 + HCl→CoCl2 + CO2 + H2O It is oxidized by air or weak oxidizing agents, forming cobalt(III) carbonate, Co2(CO3)3. It decomposes on heating, forming the oxides of cobalt with the evolution of CO2.

Toxicity

The compound is moderately toxic by ingestion. (Lewis (Sr.), R. J. 1996. Sax’s Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, 9th ed. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold.) LD50 oral (rat): 640 mg/kg

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 513-79-1 includes 6 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 3 digits, 5,1 and 3 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 7 and 9 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 513-79:
(5*5)+(4*1)+(3*3)+(2*7)+(1*9)=61
61 % 10 = 1
So 513-79-1 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
