51595-71-2 Usage

Description

Thiodimercury(I), also known as mercury(I) sulfide, is a brownish-black precipitate formed when mercury is treated with cold concentrated sulfuric acid for an extended period. It can also be prepared by the action of hydrogen sulfide or an alkaline sulfide on a mercury(I) salt solution. Upon formation, Thiodimercury(I) disproportionates to give mercury(II) sulfide and mercury. It is characterized by its black color.

Uses

Used in Chemical Industry:
Thiodimercury(I) is used as a precursor for the production of mercury(II) sulfide and elemental mercury. Its formation and subsequent disproportionation make it a valuable compound in the chemical industry for the synthesis of other mercury-containing compounds.
Used in Research and Analysis:
Thiodimercury(I) serves as a subject of study in the field of chemistry, particularly in understanding the properties and reactions of mercury and its compounds. It is used for research purposes to investigate the behavior of mercury in various chemical environments and to develop new methods for its synthesis and application.
Used in Environmental Applications:
Thiodimercury(I) can be employed in environmental applications to study the impact of mercury pollution on ecosystems and to develop strategies for mercury remediation. Its formation and disproportionation processes can provide insights into the environmental fate of mercury and its potential risks to human health and the environment.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 51595-71-2 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 5,1,5,9 and 5 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 7 and 1 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 51595-71:
(7*5)+(6*1)+(5*5)+(4*9)+(3*5)+(2*7)+(1*1)=132
132 % 10 = 2
So 51595-71-2 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

Physico-chemical properties of mercuric sulphide

Hanafi, Z.M.,Ismail, F.M.

, p. 1245 - 1248 (2007/10/02)

Differently red and black mercuric sulphide samples are prepared in a very pure state.Their density values are measured, and it is found that the red form prepared using H2S has higher densities than all other samples. The compound is stable up to 310 deg C for the red and black forms respectively as indicated from T.G.A. measurements.By subjecting the red preparation to D.T.A. an endothermic peak is observed at 270 deg C extending to 300 deg C and is attributed to a hexagonal/cubic phase transformation. On the other hand the black cubic form does not show any phase change in the range 25-300 deg C.X-ray diffraction patterns obtained for all samples indicate that micro strain is greater in the red sample prepared using sodium thiosulphate than that prepared using H2S.Particle size and strain values are approximately of the same order in both black samples. The I.R. results indicate the presence of two intense and narrow bands at 350 and 285 cm-1 for the red hexagonal form, and less intense and very broad band in case of the black cubic form. This difference is attributed to the difference in structure and/or the free carriers. The red sample prepared using H2S is found to be most stoichiometric form.
