Description
Letosteine, also known as a dicarboxylic acid monoester, is the monoethyl ester of 2-2-[(carboxymethyl)sulfanyl]ethyl-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid. It is a mucolytic agent that is utilized in the treatment of chronic bronchopneumopathies and related conditions.
Uses
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Letosteine is used as a mucolytic agent for the treatment of chronic bronchopneumopathies and related conditions. It aids in breaking down and thinning mucus in the respiratory system, making it easier for patients to clear their airways and breathe more comfortably.
Used in Respiratory Treatment:
Letosteine is used as a therapeutic agent for respiratory conditions, specifically targeting chronic bronchopneumopathies. Its mucolytic properties help alleviate symptoms and improve the overall quality of life for patients suffering from these respiratory issues.

Manufacturing Process
In an Erlenmeyer flask placed in an ice bath, and under a well-ventilated
hood, a solution of 0.1 mol of acrolein in 100 ml of ether was introduced, With
the aid of a bromine ampoule, 0.1 mol (= 11 ml) of the ethyl ester of
thioglycolic acid containing 0.5 ml of triethylamine was added drop by drop. One hour after completion of the addition, there was added 0.1 mol (15.6 g)
of chlorhydrate of cysteine in alcoholic solution. The chlorhydrate of the
expected derivative, which appeared in the form of a thick oil, was
precipitated by addition of 0.1 mol (10 g) of potassium acetate in aqueous
solution. The abundant precipitate obtained was filtered and washed in water
and ether. The product was recrystallized in a minimum of absolute alcohol.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 53943-88-7 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 5,3,9,4 and 3 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 8 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 53943-88:
(7*5)+(6*3)+(5*9)+(4*4)+(3*3)+(2*8)+(1*8)=147
147 % 10 = 7
So 53943-88-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

The invention concerns new compounds for use in the pharmaceutical industry, its subject-matter being (thio-2-ethyl)-2 carboxy-4 thiazolidinic compounds of the general formula: STR1 where R is selected from hydrogen atom, alkyl, phenyl, alkylaryl and acyl radicals, heterocyclic groups such as pyridoxazole or benzimidazole, and alkyl- carboxylic groups, particularly acetic, and esters and amide derivatives thereof, and salts of addition of the compounds. These compounds are of use in the production of medicines with analgesic and mucolytic properties.
