542-84-7 Usage
Description
COBALT CYANIDE is a chemical compound with the formula Co(CN)???, which is a deep-blue powder in its anhydrous form. It is hygroscopic, with a density of 1.872 g/cm3 and a melting point of 280°C. COBALT CYANIDE is insoluble in water but soluble in sodium or potassium cyanide solutions, ammonium hydroxide, and hydrochloric acid. The dihydrate form of the compound is a pink to reddish-brown powder or needle, which is also insoluble in water and acids.
Uses
1. Used in Catalyst Industry:
COBALT CYANIDE is used as a catalyst in various chemical reactions due to its unique properties and ability to facilitate specific transformations.
2. Used in Preparation of Cyanide Complexes:
COBALT CYANIDE is utilized in the preparation of cyanide complexes, which are essential in different industrial applications and research.
Preparation
The trihydrate salt is obtained as a reddish brown precipitate by adding potasium cyanide to a cobalt salt solution: CoCl2 + KCN + 3H2O → Co(CN)2?3H2O + 2KCl This on dehydration yields anhydrous Co(CN)2. The Co(CN)2?3H2O precipitate formed above redissolves when excess KCN is added, forming a red solution of potassium cobalt(II) cyanide, K4Co(CN)6. Stoichiomtric amount of KCN should, therefore, be used in the preparation of cobalt(II) cyanide.
Hazard
The compound is highly toxic by ingestion and possibly through other routes of exposure.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 542-84-7 includes 6 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 3 digits, 5,4 and 2 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 8 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 542-84:
(5*5)+(4*4)+(3*2)+(2*8)+(1*4)=67
67 % 10 = 7
So 542-84-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
