57-64-7 Usage

Description

Physostigmine salicylate, also known as Eserine salicylate, is a pharmaceutical compound derived from the alkaloid physostigmine. It is a white, shining, odorless crystal or white powder that is soluble in water, alcohol, and chloroform, but less soluble in ether. PHYSOSTIGMINE SALICYLATE is less deliquescent than its sulfate counterpart and turns red upon prolonged exposure to air and light. Aqueous solutions of physostigmine salicylate are neutral or slightly acidic and may also turn red over time, indicating a loss of activity.

Uses

Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Physostigmine salicylate is used as a bulk pharmaceutical for various applications, including its role as a parasympathomimetic, cholinergic, and anticholinesterase agent. It is particularly utilized in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and as an ophthalmic medication.
Used in Alzheimer's Treatment:
Physostigmine salicylate is employed as an anti-Alzheimer drug, working by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. By increasing the levels of acetylcholine in the brain, it helps improve cognitive function and memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
Used in Ophthalmology:
In the field of ophthalmology, physostigmine salicylate is used as a miotic agent, which helps constrict the pupil. This application is particularly useful in the treatment of certain eye conditions, such as glaucoma, where reducing intraocular pressure is crucial.
Brand Names:
Some of the brand names for physostigmine salicylate include Antilirium (Forest) and Isopto Eserine (Alcon).

Reactivity Profile

Behaves as a weak acid in solution.

Health Hazard

PHYSOSTIGMINE SALICYLATE is similar to physostigmine. It is classified as super toxic. The probable oral lethal dose (humans) is less than 5 mg/kg or a taste for a 150 lb. person. It is a cholinesterase inhibitor.

Fire Hazard

When heated to decomposition, PHYSOSTIGMINE SALICYLATE emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides.

Safety Profile

Poison by ingestion, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, and intraperitoneal routes. Human systemic effects: arrhythmias, nausea or vomiting. Experimental reproductive effects. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx See also PHYSOSTIGMINE.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 57-64-7 includes 5 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 2 digits, 5 and 7 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 6 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 57-64:
(4*5)+(3*7)+(2*6)+(1*4)=57
57 % 10 = 7
So 57-64-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
