585-99-9 Usage
Description
Melibiose, a disaccharide consisting of two glucose units in an alpha (1-6) glycosidic linkage, is a carbon substrate and an effector molecule that permits activation of the lac operon by binding to the repressor molecule. It is a white powder and is also known as a salt with a single molecule of water of crystallization.
Uses
Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Melibiose is used as a carbon source for the preparation of benzoylated ethyl 1-thioglycosides, which are important in the field of organic chemistry and pharmaceuticals.
Used in Material Science:
Melibiose is used as a model compound to investigate the effect of water plasticization on the molecular mobility and crystallization tendency of amorphous disaccharides, which is crucial for understanding the behavior of similar compounds in various applications, including the pharmaceutical and food industries.
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Melibiose, being a salt with a single molecule of water of crystallization, can be used in the development of pharmaceutical formulations, particularly those involving disaccharides or their derivatives.
Used in Food Industry:
As a carbon substrate, melibiose can be utilized in the food industry for various applications, such as a sweetener or a component in the production of fermented products.
Purification Methods
Melibiose crystallises as a hydrate from water or aqueous EtOH. The anomer is obtained by recrystallising 1g from a mixture of 0.35mL of H2O and 0.2mL of EtOH. It crystallises easily with m 179o and mutarotates from [] D 20 +166o to +142.3o (220minutes, c 4, H2O). Crystallisation from MeOH gives the anhydrous form which hydrates to the monohydrate in air. The anomer dihydrate m 85-86o mutarotates from [] D 20 +123.5o to +143.1o (c 4, H2O for anhydrous). [Fletcher & Diehl J Am Chem Soc 74 5774 1952, Beilstein 1 7 III/IV 3075, 17/7 V 206.]
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 585-99-9 includes 6 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 3 digits, 5,8 and 5 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 9 and 9 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 585-99:
(5*5)+(4*8)+(3*5)+(2*9)+(1*9)=99
99 % 10 = 9
So 585-99-9 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
