Description

Nomegestrol, a derivative of 19-norprogesterone, is a progestogen used in various medical applications. It is known for its ability to increase nuclear levels of the progesterone receptor in rat uterus when administered at a dose of 1 mg/animal. Nomegestrol acetate, also known as 17-hydroxy-6-methyl-19-norpregna-4,6-diene-3,20-dione acetate, is being investigated as the progestin component of a new oral contraceptive in combination with the estrogen estradiol. This new combination, NOMAC/E2, is in phase III trials and would be the first oral contraceptive to utilize estradiol itself as the estrogenic component. Structurally, Nomegestrol is considered a nor-progesterone derivative that lacks the C19 methyl group in megestrol acetate. Nomegestrol acetate is also the 19-nor derivative of megestrol acetate, which is useful in the treatment of gynecological conditions associated with luteal deficiency. It is available under the brand name LUTENYL.
