59355-75-8 Usage
Description
Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is a colorless, liquefied gas with an acetylene-like odor. It is a mixture containing 60-66.5% methylacetylene and propadiene, with the balance being propane and butane. The gas is shipped under its vapor pressure and is easily ignited, with vapors heavier than air. Contact with the liquid can cause frostbite, and any leak can be either liquid or vapor. Prolonged exposure to fire or intense heat may cause the containers to rupture violently and rocket.
Uses
Used in Industrial Applications:
Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is used as an industrial fuel gas for various purposes, including cutting, welding, brazing, heat treating, and metallizing. Its high energy content and ability to enhance the properties of other gases make it a valuable component in these applications.
Used in Welding Industry:
Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is used as a fuel gas in the welding industry for its ability to produce high temperatures and intense heat, which are essential for effective welding and cutting processes.
Used in Brazing Industry:
In the brazing industry, Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is used as a fuel gas to achieve the high temperatures required for joining metals through the use of a non-ferrous filler material with a melting point above 450°C but below the melting point of the base metals.
Used in Heat Treating Industry:
Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is used in the heat treating industry to provide the necessary heat for processes such as annealing, hardening, tempering, and normalizing. Its high energy content allows for efficient and effective heat treatment of metals.
Used in Metallizing Industry:
In the metallizing industry, Methylacetylene and propadiene mixture, stabilized is used as a fuel gas for the application of metal coatings onto various surfaces. Its high flame temperature and ability to enhance the properties of other gases make it an ideal choice for this application.
Air & Water Reactions
Highly flammable.
Reactivity Profile
METHYLACETYLENE-PROPADIENE GAS MIXTURE presents a dangerous fire and explosion hazard when exposed to heat, flame or sparks or strong oxidizing agents. The liquid material in cylinders contains about 30% propadiene. Detonation may occur at 95°C [MCA Case History No. 632]. Reacts vigorously with strong oxidizing agents. Reaction with silver nitrate forms an acetylide igniting at 150°C [Grignard, 1935, vol. 3, p. 175]. Violent explosions occurring at low temperatures in ammonia synthesis equipment have been traced to the addition products of dienes and oxides of nitrogen produced from the interaction of nitrogen oxide and oxygen. [Bretherick, 1995].
Hazard
Flammable gas; dangerous fire risk. Toxic
by inhalation. Central nervous system impairment.
Health Hazard
Simple asphyxiant. Toxicology of propadiene component not fully established. Contact with liquid may burn eyes and cause frostbite of skin.
Fire Hazard
Behavior in Fire: Containers may explode.
Safety Profile
A flammable gas
mixture. To fight fire, stop flow of gas.
When heated to decomposition it emits
acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 59355-75-8 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 5,9,3,5 and 5 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 7 and 5 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 59355-75:
(7*5)+(6*9)+(5*3)+(4*5)+(3*5)+(2*7)+(1*5)=158
158 % 10 = 8
So 59355-75-8 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
