Thiophenol reacts with 1,2-dichloroethene (a 3:1 mixture of E and Z isomers) in the gas phase at 400-550 deg C forming phenyl β-chlorovinyl sulfide (E and Z isomers, 1:1) with an overall yield of up to 84percent.The products from its further thermal transformations are benzothiophene. 3-chlorobenzothiophene, 1,2-bis(phenylthio)ethene (a mixture of stereoisomers), and 3-phenylthiobenzothiophene
