7440-72-4 Usage

Description

Fermium is a man-made radioactive element with chemical properties similar to those of erbium. It was discovered in 1952 by Ghiorso and colleagues in the debris from a thermonuclear explosion. Fermium has a half-life (t1/2) of 257Fm, which is 100 days.

Uses

Used in Nuclear Research:
Fermium is used as a research material for studying nuclear reactions and properties due to its radioactive nature and unique chemical properties.
Used in Medical Applications:
Fermium can be used as a radioactive isotope in medical applications, such as targeted radiotherapy for cancer treatment, where its radioactive decay can be harnessed to destroy cancerous cells.
Used in Industrial Applications:
Although not explicitly mentioned in the provided materials, fermium could potentially be used in industrial applications where its radioactive properties can be utilized for various purposes, such as radiography or as a neutron source in nuclear reactors.

History

The name of Fm derives from the Italian born physicist “Enrico Fermi”, who built the first man made nuclear reactor. The nuclide . . . Fm was found in the debris from the first thermonuclear weapon’s explosion, nicknamed “Mike,” on November 1, 1952, at Enewetak atoll, Marshall Islands, by a collaboration of American scientists G.R. Choppin, S.G.Thompson, A. Ghiorso and B.G. Harvey from the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois, the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico and the University of California lab at Berkeley, CA. The longest half-life associated with this unstable element is 100 day 257Fm.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 7440-72-4 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 7,4,4 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 7 and 2 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 7440-72:
(6*7)+(5*4)+(4*4)+(3*0)+(2*7)+(1*2)=94
94 % 10 = 4
So 7440-72-4 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
