7773-03-7 Usage
Description
Potassium Hydrogen Sulfite, also known as potassium bisulfite, is a chemical compound with the formula KHSO3. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and has reducing and preservative properties.
Uses
Used in Food Industry:
Potassium Hydrogen Sulfite is used as a preservative to retard bacterial action, prevent discoloration, and function as an antioxidant in various food products. However, it is not used in meats or in food recognized as a source of vitamin B1, and it is not used on fruits or vegetables intended to be served raw or presented as fresh.
Used in Chemical Industry:
Potassium Hydrogen Sulfite is used for the reduction of various organic compounds, purification of aldehydes and ketones, and as a source of sulfurous acid, particularly in brewing. It is also used in analytical chemistry, tanning, and as a chemical preservative in foods (except meats and other sources of vitamin B1).
Used in Textile Industry:
Potassium Hydrogen Sulfite is used for bleaching straw and textile fibers due to its reducing properties.
Air & Water Reactions
Soluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
POTASSIUM HYDROGEN SULFITE is a reducing agent. Rreacts as a base to neutralize acids.
Health Hazard
TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
Fire Hazard
Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 7773-03-7 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 7,7,7 and 3 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 0 and 3 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 7773-03:
(6*7)+(5*7)+(4*7)+(3*3)+(2*0)+(1*3)=117
117 % 10 = 7
So 7773-03-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
