7789-18-6 Usage

Description

Cesium nitrate is a colorless, glittering crystalline solid that is soluble in water. It is a strong oxidizing material and may burst into flames when it comes into contact with organic materials.

Uses

Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Cesium nitrate is used as a reagent in the synthesis of cesium nitratocuprate (Cs2[Cu(NO3)4]), which crystallizes in a square-planar coordination around the Cu center. It is also used in the preparation of other cesium salts.
Used in Pyrotechnic Industry:
Cesium nitrate is used as a colorant and an oxidizer in pyrotechnic compositions, contributing to the vibrant colors and reactions in fireworks and other pyrotechnic displays.
Used in Infrared Spectroscopy:
Cesium nitrate prisms are utilized in infrared spectroscopy, a technique used to study the interaction of infrared radiation with materials, providing valuable information about their molecular structure and composition.
Used in X-ray Phosphors and Scintillation Counters:
Cesium nitrate is employed in the production of x-ray phosphors and scintillation counters, which are essential components in various medical imaging and radiation detection devices.
Used in Heterogeneous Catalysts:
Cesium nitrate acts as a promoter in heterogeneous catalysts, enhancing their performance in various chemical reactions, including the synthesis of ammonia using carbon-based ruthenium catalysts.
Used in Petroleum Cracking:
Cesium nitrate is also used in the petroleum industry for cracking processes, which involve breaking down large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more valuable products.

Air & Water Reactions

Water soluble.

Reactivity Profile

Mixtures of metal/nonmetal nitrates with alkyl esters may explode owing to the formation of alkyl nitrates. Mixtures a nitrate with phosphorus, tin (II) chloride, or other reducing agents may react explosively [Bretherick 1979 p. 108-109].

Hazard

Dangerous, may ignite organic materials on contact.

Flammability and Explosibility

Nonflammable

Safety Profile

Moderately toxic by ingestion and intraperitoneal routes. Mutation data reported. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx. See also CESIUM and NITRATES.

Purification Methods

It crystallises from water (0.6mL/g) between 100o and 0o. After 1 crystallisation of 99.9% grade salt, it had K, Na and Se at 0.8, 0.4 and 0.2 ppm respectively.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 7789-18-6 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 7,7,8 and 9 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 1 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 7789-18:
(6*7)+(5*7)+(4*8)+(3*9)+(2*1)+(1*8)=146
146 % 10 = 6
So 7789-18-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

Phase formation along the PO34/Zr = 1.5 Section of the ZrO(NO3)2-H3PO4-CsF-H 2O system

Godneva,Motov,Kuznetsov,Shchur

, p. 492 - 498 (2012)

The phase formation in the system ZrO(NO3)2 H 3PO4 CsF H2O was studied along the section at the molar ratios PO^/Zr = 1.5 and CsF/Zr = 2-5 at a ZrO2 concentration in the initial solution of 2-5 wt %. New fluorophosphate zirconates, CsH2Zr2F2(PO4)3 · 1.5H2O and two modifications of CsZrF2PO4 · 0.5H 2O, were isolated, and the known phosphate zirconate CsZr 2(PO4)3 was obtained for the first time by calcining acidic fluorophosphate zirconate.
