The reaction between CHFBr2 and the dinitrogen-derived hydrazido(2-) complex [WBr(dppe)2N2H2]+Br-, in the presence of [Ph2I]+Br- and aqueous base, yields a cationic, binuclear complex [W2(μ-N2CHN2)(dppe)4Br 2]+. This complex has been isolated as its bromide, hexafluorophosphate, and Reineckate salts, and a single-crystal X-ray study of the latter confirms that the cation contains a formazanido(3-) ligand, [N2CHN2]3-, bridging two tungsten atoms in a seven-atom chain. Crystals of [[W2(μ-N2CHN2)(dppe)4Br 2]+[Cr(NH3)2(NCS)4] -.1/3CH2Cl2] are monoclinic, space group P21/n, with Z = 4, a = 19.089 (3) A?, b = 44.263 (4) A?, c = 13.807 (2) A?, β = 104.4 (1)°, and V = 11299.5 A?3. The structure was refined by blocked full-matrix least squares, with the phenyl rings treated as rigid bodies, to a final R value of 0.082 and Rw of 0.083 for the 5918 unique observed reflections [I > 3σ(I)].
