1-Acyl-2-(phenylsulfinyl)hydrazines 1 decompose in alkaline solution already at room temperature undergoing an intramolecular oxidative cleavage of the hydrazine moiety as molecular nitrogen and forming several oxygen- and sulfur-containing reduced products. The reaction is simple to the well known decomposition of 1-acyl-2-(phenylsulfonyl)hydrazines described by McFadyen Stevens. However, equimolar amounts of corresponding alcohol and carboxylic acid are formed in addition to aldehyde. This means that in this case during the nitrogen elimination a peculiar Cannizzaro reaction is taking place.
