[5-Methionine]Enkephalin, also known as Enkephalin M or [Met5] Enkephalin (ME), is an opioid pentapeptide that functions as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the central nervous system. It is derived from the precursor peptide pro-methionine-enkephalin and consists of the amino acid sequence H-Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met-Arg-OH. [5-Methionine]Enkephalin interacts with three main subtypes of receptors, including μ and δ opioid receptors for classic opioid effects, and ζ receptors for non-opioid actions such as retardation of cell growth.
