Niobium and tantalum pentachlorides react with bidentate aliphatic and aromatic hydroxyesters (ethyl-1-hydroxycyclohexylacetate (EHCA), ethyl-2-hydroxy-2-arylpropionate (EHAP) and 1-ethyl-2-hydroxy-2-aryl butyrate (EHAB) in molar ratios 1:1 and 1:2 in refluxing dry benzene.Yellow to brown coloured compounds 5-n(L)n> (where M=Nb or Ta, L=dehydroxyester and n=1 or 2) have been prepared which are soluble in dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, acetone and partially soluble in chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and benzene. These complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, electronic, IR and PMR spectral and electrical conductance data.
