The title meso-ionic compounds react thermally and photochemically with species to give dithiolatocobalt complexes. 5-Phenyl-2-(p-tolyl)-1,3-dithiolylium-4-olate gives (η5-cyclopentadienyl)(1-phenyl-2-(p-tolyl)-1,2-ethylenedithiolato)cobalt(III) with high selectivity.
