o-Aminothiophenol reacts with chalkones (I) in methanol-acetic acid to give 3-(2-aminophenylmercapto)-3-arylpropiophenones (II) which immediately undergo cyclization in situ to give 2,4-diaryl-2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothiazepines (IIIa).Compounds IIIa are easily oxidised to the corresponding 1,1-dioxides (IV) by H2O2 (30percent) in gl. acetic acid.A few compunds have been screened for their antibacterial activity against S. aureus, S. typhi., V.Comma and E. coli.
